PURE SILK GARMENTS

Our supplier has taken the original saris and has completed the silk burn test to confirm that they are Pure Silk. (see below).

Some garments may feel quite stiff when you receive them, this is because they are treated with starch to make them more rigid for cutting and tailoring. In fact you may have noticed previously that some of the high silk content silk blends use the same treatment. This will come out after 2-3 washes but do remember Pure Silk is extremely delicate so don’t be tempted to throw it into the washer!

The Pure Silk Burn Test

The simplest way to test for Pure Silk is by what is known as the burn test. This involves taking a few threads (preferably the horizontal warp threads) and holding them to a flame. (Obviously it destroys the fabric so don’t be tempted to do this with your garment!). Pure Silk burns slowly and smells like burnt hair, leaving a soft brittle ash. Synthetic fibers melt and form beads and smell more like plastic.

Remember, not all silks are created the same or indeed come from the same type of silk worm. You’ll find the lovely smooth texture of pure silk you may be familiar with, as well as the more rustic raw silk among others. Whichever garment you choose, I know you'll enjoy wearing it along with the added knowledge it is unique to you.
