A sari (sometimes spelled saree) is a garment traditionally worn by women in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. It may be an heirloom piece or an everyday garment, and there are various styles and draping methods available.
The sari is not considered a religious garment and so anyone can wear one, or wear clothes created from one, without fear of cultural appropriation. You might be asked if you wish to wear a sari when attending an Indian friend’s wedding perhaps, and it is completely acceptable to do so.
Red is often used for celebration, particularly a bridal sari, and so if you’re lucky enough to purchase a red sari skirt, chances are a woman was married in it previously. Whatever the colour of your piece, it’s wonderful to know that the fabric has previously been on an adventure all of its own.
